Troubleshooting & FAQ

Files could not yet be written to the folder

This warning means some element-file operations remain unresolved. It does not identify the cause or prove data loss.

What the warning tells you

A calm notice appears first; an unresolved condition becomes orange after about a minute. That is an elapsed-time threshold, not evidence that more files were damaged. The number counts failed element-file operations in that pass. A preview can be involved as well as an original.

The app retries while running. Other devices may show placeholders until the required media arrives. “Saved on this device” does not confirm that every original has reached the folder.

Could my iCloud storage be full?

Yes: a full account can stop new cloud uploads. But a local folder write can succeed while its upload remains pending, so this particular warning does not diagnose cloud quota. Check the cloud app’s own status. Apple documents an “Out of Space” file status in Finder’s iCloud status guide.

Other plausible causes

  • An original or preview is not available: it has not arrived, is online-only, was moved or removed, or exists only on another device.
  • Local storage is full: writes, downloads and recovery copies need disk space, separately from your cloud allowance.
  • Access changed: browser permission expired, the folder is read-only, or the drive is disconnected.
  • A file or provider is temporarily unavailable: another program may lock a file; the provider may be paused, signed out or unable to download it.
  • File restrictions or damaged data: the actual error may point to a path, read, write or verification failure.
  • An app defect: some earlier versions incorrectly warned about audio/video absent from the browser cache even when present in the folder. Updated versions handle this case; availability problems still need investigation.

Cloud transfer problems also include connection failures and provider limits. See the official troubleshooting guides for Dropbox and Google Drive for desktop.

What to do

  1. Keep the current session available

Let retries run. Do not clear browser data or uninstall the app as a first step: recent changes may exist only there.

  2. Check local space and cloud status separately

Look for a full account, paused transfers, sign-in requests or a file-specific error in the provider app.

  3. Check access and availability

Use “Grant access again” if requested. Enable offline availability where supported and let downloads finish. If a filename is known, check whether the file opens in Finder/Explorer or Files.

  4. Check recent moves and app versions

Keep the workspace folder together, including hidden folders. Update devices when available; do not delete files or replace the workspace to make the warning disappear.

  5. Report a persistent warning

Tell support the exact message, platform, app/browser version, provider and any recent move. In a desktop browser, relevant mirror element failed console entries include the element ID and underlying error. Share those selectively, without private content.

Optional folder report

The read-only folder diagnostics tool can inspect a folder in a supported desktop browser. It distinguishes missing, unreadable and empty files. It does not repair files, verify all media bytes or confirm cloud delivery. Review the report before sharing: it includes file paths and element IDs.

Protect an independent copy

When possible, export a complete backup or back up the downloaded workspace including hidden files. If export fails because an original is unavailable, keep the existing copies and resolve that file first. Sync alone is not an independent backup.
