Canvas settings: grid, background, shadows & padding

The canvas has a look — and it’s yours to set. All of it lives under Settings → Canvas settings, and every choice is saved with your workspace.

Show grid

The subtle dot grid gives your eyes reference lines while arranging. Purely visual — snapping comes from alignment guides, not the grid — so switching it off changes nothing about behavior. On by default.

Background color

Pick from eight presets — including the warm paper default, pure white, soft cream, cool blue-gray, a rosé — and three dark tones (charcoal, slate, deep green) for a dark-canvas look. Or dial in any color with the picker / HEX field. Text elements auto-adjust their default color on dark backgrounds so everything stays readable. “Default” resets to paper.

Element shadow

A slider from 0 to 100: at 0, elements sit flat like printed paper; higher values lift cards off the canvas. The default (30) is a gentle, photographic depth. Pairs nicely with background choice — dark backgrounds often like a touch more shadow.

Element padding

Controls the breathing room inside notes and cards. Tighter padding fits more words on a card; looser padding reads calmer. Default is 32.

Performance HUD

A diagnostics overlay for the curious: live render time in milliseconds, how many elements are visible, cache statistics, pen input details. Fun fact to verify yourself: the canvas typically renders in a few milliseconds even with thousands of elements. Off by default — it’s a nerd switch, and we say that with love.

Scope

These settings belong to the workspace and are saved with it. Language and input mode, by contrast, are per-device — see Language & input.
